Condition Form Examples
Reporter: Sherri Tenzing Date: June 18, 1957 Location: Seymour, to first pump
Activity: Hiking, group of 6 hikers
Weather: Overcast in town and base of mountain, mild temperature, no wind, heavy fog as we gained elevation
Trail Condition: Good at beginning, trail completely snow covered twenty minutes into the hike, solid summer snow, challenging for couple people in tennis shoes on steeper sections
Comments: Decided to abort midway due to very low visibility, had a snack and returned, solid boots and poles recommended
Reporter: Heinz Kalameander Date: July 18, 1906 Location: North California, Mount Shasta from Avalanche Gulch
Activity: Solo, climbing (packed skis)
Weather: Sun, over 10C by late morning
Camp/Hut: Bunny Flat area
Climb/Ski: Hard snow early morning, crampon and ice axe a must, fast travel. Left skis just above Red Banks; dry rock on summit. Descended by ski, great turns in gully below Red Banks and in Avalanche Gulch. Huge sun cups lower down and on flats.
Wildlife/People: Mosquitoes are terrible around trail head, camp.
Incident: Rock fall danger from red banks area in warm weather.
Comments: Much more fun skiing earlier in season (May/June), easier climb day if camp at Horse Camp
Reporter: Sylvie Sudan Date: March 21-22, 1966 Location: Garibaldi Park, Garibaldi Neve traverse start from diamond head
Activity: 7 alpine touring skiers, 1 snowshoer
Road: Road to diamond head parking lot was completely snow covered, seemed like ice under fresh snow, only 4WD and chains could make it. Road to Rubble Creek parking was better, packed snow, no problem.
Weather: Overcast with flurries first day, winds light; second day sun in morning, then overcast and at times weather closed in with low visibility late afternoon, moderate wind from west. Temperature around -3 to -10 C during days.
Camp/Hut: Camped to the west (left) of Opal Cone around 5000ft. One tent and couple snow caves. Wasn't our planned location. Slow travel first day.
Climb/Ski: Fresh snow light, around 30-40cm, slow travel, took turns trail breaking. Downhill sections were great. After Garibaldi lake downhill trail to Rubble Creek parking lot was alright; good snow cover on top, a bit icy and some rock/debris toward the bottom, skied the whole trail. If skis are worth more than $80, better to walk the bottom 1.5 km of trail.
Snowpack/Avalanche: Recent storm snow from few days ago seemed to be binding pretty well and settling due to mild temp. Avalanche forecast was moderate for tree line. Main concern was traversing north slopes below Gargoyles down to Ring Creek. Compression test hard on a crust 30cm below surface (not a clean shear); and no results from ski cutting. Traveled one at a time using tree islands.
Wildlife/People: Elfin lakes hut was packed with people mid-day on first day.
